Job Summary
The Safeguarding & Code of Conduct Specialist at the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a key position responsible for developing and implementing safeguarding policies and procedures that ensure the protection and rights of all individuals involved in DRC’s operations. This role requires a specialist with a deep understanding of safeguarding principles and the ability to ensure compliance with the DRC Code of Conduct, contributing to creating a safe and respectful environment for both beneficiaries and staff.

Location: Abuja or Maiduguri, Borno (with frequent visits to other DRC locations)
Employment Period: Starting May or June 2026 – 1 year renewable

Key Responsibilities

Safeguarding Policy Development and Implementation:
Develop, implement, and regularly update safeguarding policies, ensuring they are in line with DRC’s standards and best practices.
Ensure that safeguarding policies are communicated effectively to all staff and stakeholders and are consistently applied across all DRC operations. -
Training and Awareness:
Provide safeguarding training and capacity-building sessions for DRC staff and partners to raise awareness of safeguarding issues, reporting mechanisms, and Code of Conduct compliance.
Monitor the effectiveness of safeguarding training programs and suggest improvements as needed. -
Code of Conduct Compliance:
Enforce the DRC Code of Conduct and ensure that all staff understand and adhere to its principles.
Address any breaches of the Code of Conduct, ensuring appropriate and timely investigations and actions are taken. -
Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
Conduct regular risk assessments related to safeguarding issues and work closely with departments to develop strategies for risk mitigation.
Collaborate with senior management and other departments to ensure that safeguarding risks are integrated into the overall risk management framework. -
Incident Reporting and Response:
Oversee and manage the safeguarding incident reporting mechanisms, ensuring that all reports are handled in a timely, confidential, and sensitive manner.
Provide support to staff and stakeholders in the management of safeguarding cases and incidents. -
Collaboration and Coordination:
Work closely with external stakeholders, including local authorities, other humanitarian organizations, and civil society partners, to ensure effective safeguarding practices are followed.
Represent DRC in external meetings related to safeguarding and ethical standards.
Required Qualifications

Education:
A relevant degree in social sciences, law, international relations, or a related field.
Professional certifications or specialized training in safeguarding or related disciplines will be an advantage. -
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in safeguarding or a similar role within the humanitarian or development sector.
Proven experience in implementing safeguarding policies, managing Code of Conduct compliance, and addressing safeguarding concerns.
Familiarity with international safeguarding standards and best practices, especially within the humanitarian sector. -
Skills:
Strong knowledge of safeguarding principles, policies, and practices.
Excellent communication, training, and capacity-building skills.
Ability to manage sensitive issues with confidentiality and professionalism.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and propose effective solutions.
Preferred Skills

Experience working with refugees, displaced populations, or other vulnerable groups.

Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks related to safeguarding.

Fluency in English and another language relevant to DRC’s operations (e.g., French, Arabic, Spanish) is a plus.
